Asbestos Laboratory Services is a UKAS Accredited Testing Laboratory No. 4668 to ISO/IEC 17025. We can analyse samples supplied by our clients to determine if asbestos fibres are present within a sample and, if so, the type of asbestos fibre. This includes common asbestos fibres such as Chrysotile (white), Amosite (brown), and Crocidolite (blue) as well as other less known asbestos fibre types.

Testing Process

Asbestos Laboratory Services are accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 to test samples of suspect materials using Polarised Light Microscopy (PLM) against the HSE technical manual HSG248.

Every Sample received is prepared by the analyst using visual analysis under a stereo microscope. The morphology, appearance and fibre colour is recorded. Any suspect fibre is mounted on a glass side in a Refractive Index (RI) fluid that is perceived to be the nearest match to the RI of the suspect fibre.

The sample is then mounted and viewed through the Polorised Light Microscope (PLM) the following checks are then performed by the analyst:

 

  • Pleochroism
  • Birefringence
  • Extinction
  • Sign of Elongation
  • Dispersion Staining

With over 3000 different products known to contain asbestos, it is important you check any suspected Asbestos Containing Material (ACM) prior to works which may disturb it and potentially expose people to asbestos fibres.

The Lab

As well as our UKAS Accreditation, Asbestos Laboratory Services take part in the quarterly Asbestos in Materials Scheme (AIMS) run by HSL.

All of our analysts are qualified to P401 – Identification of Asbestos in Bulk Samples (PLM) by the British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS)
